A field guide to
your night atlas.

Explore cities, neighborhoods, and communities through their published geographic sources.

Download the application ↓

Explore the map

Open on your computer

Download and extract the ZIP. In the extracted folder, run:

python -m http.server 8000 --directory dist

Then open http://localhost:8000 in your browser. Use the web server instead of double-clicking index.html. The polygons, search data, labels, and map library are included. The street basemap needs internet access.

Deploy anywhere

Upload the contents of dist/ to a static website host. When connecting the repository, choose dist as the publish folder and leave the build command empty. No backend or API key is required. Keep the folder structure intact and make sure the host serves JSON and GeoJSON files.

The ChatGPT-hosted version is private to its owner. Configure access separately if you deploy to another host.

Know the coverage

All 88 incorporated cities are included. Neighborhood coverage is partial and varies by source. Burbank has four verified names without neighborhood polygons. Santa Monica’s source provides four organization areas. Neighborhoods elsewhere are included only when a usable source was verified.

Alternative definitions are intentionally separate layers. Entry counts across them are not counts of unique places. Municipal publication of a neighborhood map does not make neighborhood boundaries legal city limits.

Region labels use official 2022 Public Health Service Planning Areas. The City GeoHub’s Mapping L.A. layer is an approximate editorial snapshot from 2016. Other datasets have their own update histories.

Open Sources & coverage in the atlas for every publisher and exact GIS endpoint. The download includes a detailed README, provenance metadata, the data-processing scripts, and validation instructions.

Verification

Source counts, the 88-city inventory, coordinates, source references, and JavaScript syntax are checked. Browser automation was unavailable during creation, so a visual and live interaction check on your target browsers is still recommended.
